U.S. Reinstates Student Visas as ICE Plans Overhaul of Enforcement Procedures

The Biden administration is taking significant steps to support international students by reinstating legal immigration statuses that were previously revoked under the Trump-era “no-show” policy. The policy had led to terminations of immigrant students’ legal status if they missed or canceled classes—even for valid reasons—which raised flags around due process and administrative fairness.

According to NBC News, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are now working to rectify those terminations and ensure students can resume their academic programs. Senior DHS officials revealed that over 2,200 student visa records are being re-evaluated, and any removals based on the flawed policy could be reversed.

Meanwhile, ICE is currently formulating a new “procedural framework” for future student visa terminations to prevent similar injustices. Immigration advocates and legal experts praise the restoration efforts, emphasizing the policy’s impact on students who were often unjustly penalized during the pandemic and remote learning era.

This shift reflects a broader change in immigration priorities under the Biden administration, aiming for fairness, transparency, and support for legal foreign students who contribute significantly to the U.S. education system and economy.
