Huawei Ramps Up AI Race with New Chip to Challenge Nvidia’s Dominance
Huawei is preparing to test a cutting-edge AI chip that could offer strong competition to Nvidia’s market-leading processors, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The chip, called the Ascend 910B, is Huawei’s latest effort to establish itself as a major player in the flourishing AI hardware scene, especially as U.S. sanctions have limited its access to American technology.
Chinese tech giants, including Baidu, Tencent, and Alibaba, are said to be evaluating the Ascend 910B as a potential alternative to Nvidia’s coveted GPUs. Demand for AI-optimized chips has surged globally due to explosive interest in generative AI products — from advanced chatbots to image generators. Huawei’s entry comes as Beijing prioritizes developing homegrown semiconductor technologies amid escalating U.S.–China tech tensions.
Although Huawei’s chip may not yet surpass Nvidia’s leading hardware, it signals China’s accelerating push to achieve chip independence and innovation. If successful, Huawei could help loosen Nvidia’s grip on the Chinese AI market, marking a major shift in the global semiconductor landscape.
