The AI tool works by scanning underwater recordings at scale, identifying patterns and species-specific signals that would often be missed by humans. Because reefs worldwide are threatened by climate change, pollution, and overfishing, having a fast, non-invasive monitoring method is crucial. Early tests in the Great Barrier Reef and coastal sites in Australia showcased the AI’s accuracy and potential for broader use. Scientists say this approach can revolutionize how marine biologists track reef decline and recovery, steering conservation efforts where they’re needed most.
