AI Sparks Hopes in Supply Chains, But Gaps Stall Full-Throttle Adoption

Great Expectations Meet Ground Reality

Artificial intelligence is rapidly capturing the attention of supply chain executives, with nearly 90% of leaders optimistic about AI’s transformative potential. However, a new study by ToolsGroup and the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) reveals that a substantial implementation gap is hindering progress. Despite the hopeful outlook, many organizations remain stuck in pilot phases or early deployments, unable to scale AI technologies effectively across their operations. Barriers like outdated infrastructure, organizational resistance, and lack of cross-functional expertise continue to hold companies back from harnessing the full productivity and efficiency AI can offer.

Visibility and Agility: The AI Promise Yet to Be Fulfilled

The supply chain world is hungry for quicker decision-making, better forecasting, and improved responsiveness to global disruptions—all areas where AI excels. The study underscores AI’s promise to deliver these capabilities by unlocking end-to-end visibility and powering data-driven agility. Yet paradoxically, the same companies banking on these benefits often cite poor data quality and siloed systems as reasons for underperformance. This disconnect highlights a growing need for companies to not only invest in AI tools but also modernize their ecosystems and break down internal data barriers to truly reap returns.

From Pilot to Scale: Closing the AI Execution Gap

While enthusiasm runs high, only a small fraction of organizations have succeeded in operationalizing AI across their supply chains. The report identifies a critical need for stronger change management, executive alignment, and internal upskilling to bridge the adoption divide. Companies that have successfully scaled AI investments typically leverage clear governance models and prioritize integration between business units. Without this strategic focus, experts warn, supply chains risk being left behind in an increasingly AI-driven global market.
