AI-Powered Safety Goes to School

Rahway Schools Embrace AI for Entry Security

Rahway Public Schools in New Jersey have become the latest district to deploy Evolv Technology’s AI-driven screening system to improve school safety. Evolv Express, a weapons detection system that uses sensor technology combined with AI software, now scans students and staff as they enter school buildings—without halting foot traffic or causing long lines. Rahway’s Superintendent, Patricia Camp, said the district implemented the technology in response to heightened awareness around school security, with the goal of creating a safe and welcoming environment. The system uses a combination of intelligent detection hardware and real-time software analytics to identify potential threats while minimizing false alarms.

Safety Without the Bottlenecks

The school district prioritized a solution that wouldn’t disrupt the student experience. Traditional metal detectors often require individual screenings, slowing entry and increasing anxiety. In contrast, Evolv’s open-gate system processes large numbers of people efficiently and discreetly. More than 4,000 students across seven Rahway schools now pass through Evolv portals daily. According to school officials, staff have received extensive training, and the system has been configured to align with Rahway’s specific needs. While privacy and overreach remain topics of national discussion, Rahway’s leadership sees the technology as a balanced and proactive step toward ensuring safety without sacrificing school culture.
