AI Rolls Into the Bike Lane Battle

Sacramento is putting artificial intelligence on two wheels—literally. As part of a new traffic enforcement strategy, the city has partnered with a startup called Hayden AI to equip public transit buses with AI-powered camera systems. These smart cameras scan for vehicles encroaching on bike lanes, capturing real-time violations and sending that data to city officials for potential enforcement. With this proactive, data-driven approach, Sacramento is making a high-tech push to keep bike lanes safer and more accessible for cyclists.

From Tech Pilot to Safer Streets

The initiative is currently in a pilot phase, with selected Sacramento Regional Transit buses recording violations during their regular routes. Unlike traditional enforcement methods, which often rely on intermittent patrols or complaints, this system provides continuous insight into bike lane misuse. City officials hope the data collected will support more focused policy decisions and potentially expand into full-time enforcement. If successful, the program could become a model for other U.S. cities looking to merge tech and transit to support micro-mobility and street safety.
